The project presented an exciting challenge: reimagining a building with a significant past and transforming it into an iconic residence under the Ritz Carlton brand.
Previously home to the Heart Institute, a fully functional hospital, the building underwent an adaptive reuse process led by the renowned architect Piero Lissoni. The result is a residence where Wall Studio’s design vision integrates seamlessly with the building’s identity. The owners, a family who divide their time between Miami and New York, had a clear vision for their new home: a serene sanctuary designed for family enjoyment and togetherness, without compromising sophistication. Wall Studio took on the challenge of bringing this vision to life, creating an environment that maximizes the connection with the surrounding landscape while prioritizing comfort and aesthetics. What makes this penthouse truly special is not just its evident luxury but its ability to feel intimate and welcoming despite its grand scale. Visitors have expressed admiration for the sensation of being in "a house in the sky," thanks to the expansive terraces and unparalleled views.
The primary objective of the interior design was to fully embrace the penthouse’s vast openness while ensuring a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. However, the expansive open-plan layout required strategic solutions to prevent it from feeling too stark or impersonal. To achieve this, the design team incorporated architectural partitions without obstructing spatial continuity. Elements such as rift-cut oak slatted walls allow natural light to filter through while maintaining unobstructed views. These subtle divisions define functional areas without the need for solid walls, creating a dynamic and immersive spatial experience.
The use of natural materials was a key element in the design proposal, not only for their elegant aesthetic but also for their ability to age gracefully, adding longevity and warmth to the project. Wide European plank flooring was chosen for the bedrooms, while soft-toned natural travertine stone was used throughout the main living areas, establishing a neutral and calming color palette. The selected finishes evoke a sense of understated luxury: aged stone, textured marble, and brushed wood add tactile richness that enhances every space. The intention behind these choices was clear—to create an environment that is not only visually stunning but also inviting and lived-in.
One of the most successful aspects of the design is the living area, conceived as a flexible space that adapts to different moments in family life. A custom-built TV cabinet with open shelving divides the playroom from the main lounge, allowing for visual continuity and a sense of connection. The game table, strategically placed, serves as both an entertainment hub and an additional dining space for children during family gatherings. This fluidity between spaces reflects Wall Studio’s intention to create a home that adapts to the family’s rhythm without compromising design or functionality. The seamless connection to private terraces—complete with a lap pool and jacuzzi—reinforces the sense of barrier-free living, where indoor and outdoor spaces merge organically.
The penthouse’s design is enriched with bespoke elements that add character and uniqueness. A standout example is the custom-designed wine cellar, capable of holding over 240 bottles. Accented with leather and bronze-clad handles, it serves as both a functional feature and a sculptural statement in the dining and family rooms. Additionally, the integration of cutting-edge technology enhances the residence’s functionality. A smart home system allows the family to control every aspect of the apartment, including lighting, climate, and outdoor areas, all from their home in New York. This technological integration adds a layer of convenience without compromising the warm ambiance of the space.
Lighting plays a fundamental role in shaping the spatial experience of the penthouse. Linear architectural lighting was used to highlight key details and enhance the sense of openness. In key areas, Ketra lighting was installed to showcase the owners' art collection with precision.
Every lighting detail was carefully considered: recessed LED fixtures in millwork were calibrated to 2700K to create a warm and inviting glow, while a statement Bocci chandelier in the kitchen incorporates glass orbs with air plants, seamlessly blending art, light, and nature into a single piece.
The final result of this project goes beyond impeccable aesthetics—it is a space that resonates emotionally with those who inhabit it. The Penthouse at the Ritz Carlton Residences in Miami Beach is a prime example of how well-executed design can completely transform a space. The careful selection of materials, meticulous attention to lighting, and seamless integration of smart home technology have resulted in a residence that perfectly balances sophistication and functionality. Beyond its refined aesthetics, this home is a reflection of its owners—elegant, welcoming, and full of character. Wall Studio has once again demonstrated that exceptional design is not just about furniture or materials, but about how a space can enhance the lives of its occupants. In this penthouse, beauty and functionality coexist effortlessly, creating a sanctuary where life is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest.
