It is a gentle composition where order, light and memory converge. Every surface, volume and material speaks of restraint and intention, making the apartment feel expansive yet intimate, coherent yet quietly expressive.

From the outset, the project was guided by the personalities and preferences of its residents—a conservative, elegant family drawn to the nostalgia of 1970s design. This sensibility informed every decision, from the linear organisation of the space to the tone and tactility of the materials. By maintaining clean lines and maximising natural light, the apartment feels larger and more fluid, offering continuous sightlines that guide the gaze outward toward its spectacular surrounding views. Furniture becomes the organising force of the interior. Each piece was designed in close collaboration with the clients, resulting in a collection that balances aesthetic identity with everyday needs. Materials like tzalam wood highlight natural variation and texture, while a green-olive sofa introduces a subtle yet expressive accent within the tonal palette. Rather than relying on contrast or excess, the design strategy allows each element to breathe, resulting in a space that feels curated but never forced.

"Guided by light, crafted with restraint, the interior becomes a backdrop for both memory and modernity."

The spatial planning is governed by a clear visual rhythm. Straight lines and defined axes enhance the perception of continuity, extending the visual field from one area to another. This approach not only makes the apartment feel more expansive, but also introduces a quiet logic to the movement through space—an experience that feels both intuitive and refined. The palette of pale, sandy hues acts as a subtle canvas, echoing the tones of Mérida’s natural light and grounding the interior in warmth and calm. Within this backdrop, textures—both natural and crafted—play a key role. Bejuco, a regional vine material traditionally used by local artisans, is incorporated into select furniture pieces, reinforcing the project’s connection to place and cultural memory.

The lobby, often overlooked in apartment design, receives particular attention. Resolved with a screen of wood and metal, it permits light to pass through while establishing a welcoming threshold. This design move blends privacy and openness, introducing the project’s key themes—light, order, and warmth—before one even enters the main living space. Art and lighting are treated as part of the architecture, rather than as additions. Carefully selected artworks punctuate the soft-toned walls, while daylight, modulated by the building’s orientation and interior layout, becomes a material in itself. Together, these elements enrich the space without overwhelming it, underscoring the importance of proportion, restraint, and contextual sensitivity.

"Each detail, from handwoven bejuco to warm tzalam, reflects a commitment to clarity, comfort, and cultural resonance."

Photography by Vanessa Alejandro captures the subtlety of the space with care and clarity. Her lens reveals not just the architecture, but the mood—the way light falls across textured wood, the softness of an olive sofa in afternoon sun, and the quiet dialogue between art, furniture, and surface. These images reinforce the project’s essence: calm, coherent, and designed for life. Departamento TA is a study in quiet confidence. It reveals how simplicity—when grounded in precision and purpose—can result in deeply personal, enduring interiors. This is architecture not as spectacle, but as support. A calm, ordered interior that responds with elegance to the rhythms of daily life.
