Yayoi Kusama, the pioneering Japanese avant-garde artist whose seven-decade practice encompassed painting, sculpture, installation, performance, fiction and poetry, has died aged 97. Her official studio statement says she continued painting until her final days. Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Rooms, polka-dot environments, soft sculptures and pumpkin forms became some of contemporary art’s most recognizable spatial experiences, exerting lasting influence on museum attendance, exhibition design, fashion collaborations and the boundary between artwork and inhabitable interior.
