About this story
CO-HATY: Pool of Questions is being developed by the team behind CO-HATY, an initiative established by METALAB and relocated members of Ukrainian Urban Curators to convert abandoned buildings into stable homes for internally displaced people. The proposed Venice installation uses an accessible shallow pool as a setting for questions about displacement, affordable housing, shared space, dignity and rest during an ongoing war.
Status and timeline
METALAB’s proposal was selected through the Ukrainian Institute’s open competition. Preliminary development, research, fees, travel and material production are scheduled during 2026, with final production and installation in 2027. Biennale preview dates are May 6–7, 2027; the exhibition runs May 8–November 21, 2027.
Design highlights
A dark, shallow and touchable body of water is conceived as a collective spatial device rather than a conventional display. The pavilion links an experiential installation in Venice to CO-HATY’s practical work in adaptive reuse and community-based housing.
