About this story
The approximately 59,500-square-meter Suzhou Museum of Contemporary Art contains roughly 11,300 square meters of exhibition space on the shore of Jinji Lake. Its architecture is organized as nine interconnected standalone pavilions beneath a flowing, silver-white roof. Four primary exhibition halls reach heights of up to 18 meters, while lakeside areas accommodate education, exchange, performance and commercial functions. The formal opening is accompanied by exhibitions addressing global art, contemporary Chinese art, technological art and architecture, including the permanent BIG: Materialism installation.
Status and timeline
Construction began in December 2022 and was followed by trial operation in early 2026. The museum formally opened to the public on August 30, 2026; a four-month opening art season is underway.
