About this story
CCA Tashkent occupies a transformed 1912 building originally associated with Tashkent's tram and electrical infrastructure. Studio KO adapted the industrial structure into a multidisciplinary institution for visual art, performance, film, design, writing, music, research and education. The program includes exhibition halls, public and educational spaces, a library, restaurant and concept store. The inaugural exhibition, Hikmah, brings together Uzbek and international artists and responds to the architecture through themes including wisdom, material knowledge, memory, ecology, spirituality and transformation.
Status and timeline
The center opened to the public September 6, 2026 following reconstruction that began in late 2022. It now operates six days per week.
Design highlights
Adaptive reuse of industrial heritage; preservation of a tall, basilica-like hall; choreographed movement from below grade into exhibition space; integration of art, education and public gathering; dialogue between old fabric and contemporary insertions.
