The renewal will modernize building infrastructure, including HVAC, improve accessibility and investigate spatial reuse within and potentially beyond the existing footprint. Ida Noyes Hall will retain its name, while new architectural elements and expanded programs will be known as the David M. Rubenstein Commons. The University intends to retain the Pub and DOC Films in the building, subject to final plans.
Status and timeline
Steven Holl Architects was selected by the University’s board in May 2026, and the official July 31 update confirms that design and stakeholder engagement are underway. Designs and a construction timeline have not been finalized. The consultation process is expected to continue into the beginning of the autumn quarter, and temporary closure during construction is anticipated.
