Steel superstructure begins rising at Andrade Morettin’s sustainable IMPA campus

Rua Barão de Oliveira Castro, Jardim Botânico, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

About this story

The new campus of the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics is designed by Andrade Morettin Arquitetos as four narrow linear pavilions following the contours of a steep, formerly quarried site. The 8,762.76-square-metre built area occupies approximately 3.48% of the 251,824.72-square-metre property. Program elements include 67 researcher offices, seven classrooms, a 213-seat auditorium, study rooms, computer laboratories, a data-processing center, a 258-square-metre reading room and virtual library, 129 student-housing units, dining and communal spaces. The federally and privately funded expansion is intended to broaden IMPA’s research, education and industry partnerships.

Status and timeline

Assembly of the steel structure began August 17, 2026, with installation of the first column for Block 2. The complex comprises four building blocks. No completion date was publicly confirmed.

Design highlights

Lightweight pavilions elevated on pilotis; buildings staggered along terrain contours; minimal site coverage; interconnected covered and open spaces; green roofs and photovoltaic panels; 500,000-litre stormwater-retention basin; native Atlantic Forest restoration and planting; low-impact materials and passive climate modulation.
