Snøhetta completes sensory coffee flagship élan in Oslo

Sjøfartsbygningen, Kvadraturen, Oslo, Norway

About this story

Snøhetta has transformed Magnat Kaffehus’ former showroom into élan, a coffee flagship and craft-focused hospitality interior. A circular stained-oak counter removes the conventional division between guest and barista. A carved, heat-treated cork volume, custom cork furniture and a bespoke directional sound installation organize an open plan with active and quiet zones. A smaller cork-lined room can be reserved for meetings and gatherings.

Status and timeline

Completed and announced September 16, 2026.

Design highlights

The palette references the layers and colors of the coffee cherry. Renewable, porous cork contributes warmth and acoustic absorption, while a turquoise overhead speaker installation echoes both raw coffee beans and the oxidized-copper details of the historic building. The soundscape changes gradually and is experienced differently as visitors move through the café.
