About this story
THE PASONA natureverse retreat is a long-stay wellness destination at the northern tip of Awaji Island, between Osaka Bay and a gently sloping mountain. Shigeru Ban Architects organized two linear building elements around a light-filled atrium to form a D-shaped plan. The seaside elevation uses the seawall as a podium and emphasizes transparent façades and four horizontal floor plates, while the mountain elevation is defined by a vertical rhythm of timber-clad columns. A large timber canopy and grand staircase mark the entrance. The retreat combines accommodations with natural hot-spring baths, thalassotherapy, fitness, yoga, meditation, dining, an event hall, business facilities, and medical support developed with Kobe University Hospital. Selected rooms use sensor-equipped adjustable beds developed by Nitori and MinebeaMitsumi.
Status and timeline
Completed and opened on June 23, 2026. The 57-room retreat is operational and accepting reservations.
