About this story
The Portland Museum of Art will open PMA | AMP, a temporary open-air pavilion on the site of its planned expansion. LEVER Architecture designed the structure with project manager Urban Projects Collaborative, design-build firm Woodhull and timber fabricator WholeTrees. Built largely from Maine-sourced timber and regional materials, it will support installations, performances, workshops, film screenings, public seating, free Wi-Fi and an outdoor office. A site-specific mural is credited to artist Jenna Pirello.
Status and timeline
The 4,200-square-foot pavilion opens free to the public on October 2, 2026. It will operate seasonally ahead of permanent expansion construction and is designed for eventual deconstruction, relocation and reuse.
Design highlights
Forest-to-frame regional sourcing; design for disassembly and relocation; temporary architecture as a tool for testing future museum programming; an open civic room linking the museum with the surrounding Arts District.
