Rio de Janeiro’s state culture department is opening portions of the new Museu da Imagem e do Som to visitors through the exhibition Arquitetura em Cena – o MIS Copa antes da Imagem e do Som. The exhibition documents the design and construction of the long-delayed waterfront museum while allowing access to the Baixo Atlântico and mezzanine. Conceived by Diller Scofidio + Renfro with local execution associated with Índio da Costa, the building folds the idea of Roberto Burle Marx’s Copacabana promenade upward into a vertical boulevard. The completed program is planned to include temporary and long-duration exhibitions, research and education spaces, a cinema-theater, a 280-seat auditorium, café, restaurant, club and lookout.
Status and timeline
The building remains in its final implementation phase. Timed guided visits to the temporary architecture exhibition are listed for September 12, 2026. Full museum completion and opening are expected in 2027, although the exact date has not been formally confirmed on the current official project page.
