MALBA has appointed Frida Escobedo Studio to design an expansion beneath adjacent Plaza Perú. The project will double the museum’s exhibition area while retaining the square as open public space. The preliminary program includes new temporary exhibition galleries, an auditorium, multiuse spaces, an exterior plaza-courtyard, workshops, storage and offices. Spaces for cinema, literature, education and public programs are intended to operate either as part of the museum circuit or independently outside normal gallery hours. The commission was announced during MALBA’s 25th-anniversary celebrations alongside major collection and endowment announcements.
Status and timeline
Preliminary design is underway. MALBA expects the expansion to open in late 2029 or early 2030.
Design highlights
An underground cultural extension preserves the civic function of Plaza Perú while introducing a sunken exterior courtyard and more flexible connections among exhibitions, cinema, literature, education and public programming.
