About this story
Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art occupies a 300,000-square-foot building by Ma Yansong of MAD with Stantec. More than 100,000 square feet of gallery space is distributed across over 30 galleries. The structure rises above a sheltered central plaza beneath a 185-foot arch and elliptical oculus, with an exterior assembled from more than 1,200 individually shaped fiberglass-reinforced polymer panels. Studio-MLA designed the surrounding 13-acre park and gardens with more than 300 new trees, drought-tolerant planting, a hanging garden, amphitheater, meadow, waterfall fountain and outdoor sculpture. Rockwell Group designed the Skywalker Grill restaurant.
Status and timeline
Construction is complete. Member previews run September 5–11, 2026; a neighborhood preview is September 13; opening night is September 19; public opening is September 22, 2026. Timed-entry tickets are available.
Design highlights
Continuous curvilinear form without straight exterior lines; lightweight custom FRP envelope; building conceived as an extension of the park canopy; elevated mass creating a sheltered civic plaza; central oculus; climate-resilient Southern California planting; public landscape replacing surface parking.
