Linden House is Schemata Architects' renovation and extension of one of five guesthouses at Dromgarriff Rainforest near Glengarriff in County Cork. Led by architect Jo Nagasaka with project architect Rikako Sho, the 571.14-square-meter project adapts two existing buildings formerly connected by an entrance corridor. The corridor was enlarged into a communal yoga and gathering room, while the interiors of both existing wings were renovated. The extension accounts for 124.43 square meters. The official project data describes two above-ground stories, timber-frame construction, a partially steel-framed extension, and retained cavity-wall construction in the existing buildings. Oak is used extensively inside to establish material continuity with the surrounding woodland. The central room has a sawtooth roof: south-facing surfaces carry photovoltaic panels, while north-facing openings admit diffuse daylight. The architect presents this pairing as a small-scale version of the estate's broader regenerative strategy—using locally available sunlight for both daytime illumination and electrical generation. Dromgarriff Rainforest's operating website describes Linden as a ten-bedroom, ten-bathroom retreat house for groups of up to 20 people, with a purpose-built yoga/community room, open-plan kitchen and dining space, living room, terrace, barbecue area, and indoor and outdoor sauna access. Bryan and Tara Meehan are identified by the architects as the leaders of the wider garden and forest regeneration effort. Their stated long-term model is to operate the estate's guesthouses as retreats and reinvest resulting revenue in the restoration and care of the gardens and woodland; the design team also describes a future ambition to reconstruct the former Roche's Royal Hotel in a new form. These economic and future-development plans remain statements of intent rather than independently documented commitments. Construction is credited to DHC Construction. Ireland's National Parks & Wildlife Service independently confirms that the wider Glengarriff Harbour and Woodland Special Area of Conservation includes protected old sessile oak woodland and other qualifying habitats and species; parcel-level confirmation for every part of the private estate was not completed during this review.
Status and timeline
Construction was completed in July 2025, and Linden House opened in August 2025. ArchDaily published the selected feature on September 23, 2026. The completed property is currently presented by Dromgarriff Rainforest as accommodation for wellness and cultural retreats.
