José Martí Park’s climate-adaptive waterfront redesign moves into construction

This Miami River project is an immediately relevant local test of public-space design for sea-level rise, high tides and stormwater. The city intends the WEDG-verified scheme to establish a template for future municipal waterfront projects.

About this story

The City of Miami is beginning Phase I of the José Martí Park Adaptive Design Project. Work includes a new seawall, living-shoreline stabilization, stormwater drainage, high-tide resilience measures, a kayak launch, improved riverwalk and waterfront access, a riverside docking deck, solar lighting, expanded tree canopy, biodiversity-oriented landscaping, a playground, security cameras and new lighting. The project is partly funded through the Miami Forever Bond and grants from the Florida Inland Navigation District and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Status and timeline

Phase I construction is scheduled to begin in September 2026, closing the park’s northern area while the remainder stays open. Anticipated Phase I completion is August 2028. Selected southern-area improvements will follow in Phase II.
