Busan Metropolitan City and Design Council Busan are running a two-stage international design competition to redevelop the aging Hwamyeong Outdoor Swimming Pool into a four-season family water-play and leisure complex. The competition area covers approximately 25,757 square metres, with an anticipated development area of approximately 14,106 square metres. Proposals must address site-specific users and ecology, spatial connections, facilities, public goods, sustainability, maintenance, and long-term operations. The three stage-two teams will each receive KRW 30 million for design development. The final awardee receives a KRW 330 million detailed-design and engineering commission. International entrants must form a joint venture with a qualified South Korean firm by the registration deadline.
Status and timeline
The competition is open. The August 21 site briefing at 4:00 p.m. KST had already passed by this research run. Stage-one proposals are due September 7, 2026; up to three teams will advance, with final selection expected by October 19 and detailed design scheduled through December 28, 2026.
