About this story
BDP has completed Greenheys, a 131,000-square-foot laboratory and research building at Manchester Science Park. The practice provided architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and acoustics. Developed by Bruntwood SciTech and constructed by Willmott Dixon, the building contains three floors of flexible Containment Level 2 laboratories and associated write-up space for organizations working in biotechnology, genomics, diagnostics and related fields. Technical infrastructure includes enhanced ventilation and cooling, dedicated fume extraction, high-specification local exhaust ventilation, increased floor loading and systems supporting biological-sample movement and storage. The fully electric building targets BREEAM Excellent and incorporates a 1,700-square-metre living wall containing 160,000 plants and habitat for pollinators and more than 125 invertebrate species.
Status and timeline
Construction is complete. UK Biobank is preparing to relocate approximately 11 million biological samples and around half of its 400-person team from Stockport; the move-in completion date has not been published.
