Google has released updated designs for the Thompson Center redevelopment, including a widened central opening below the 17-story atrium, a cascading grand staircase, terraced seating, retail and dining. Architecture Plus Information developed the new atrium concept. Artist Sanford Biggers has been commissioned to create Vector, a 30-foot-tall glazed-terracotta sculpture based on quilt geometries and Illinois collections. Google is also commissioning an atrium artwork through a paid After School Matters youth program and supporting A Better Chicago’s education initiative.
Status and timeline
Redevelopment is in progress. Google plans to open the building to employees, tenants and the public in 2028.
