Generali Stadium: Foster + Partners and MANICA unveil Milan’s proposed new San Siro successor

A major stadium proposal with consequences beyond football: the 71,500-seat venue is part of a larger urban regeneration plan, and its design raises questions about how the clubs intend to carry San Siro’s atmosphere into a new building. The announcement is timely, but delivery remains subject to planning approvals.

Milan, Italy; planned beside the existing San Siro stadium

About this story

FC Internazionale Milano and AC Milan unveiled the proposed Generali Stadium, designed by Foster + Partners and MANICA. The planned 71,500-seat stadium features a concrete X-frame structure, a double-curved roof, and two steep end stands intended to bring supporters closer to the pitch. The clubs describe the roof as incorporating photovoltaic technology and acoustic optimization, alongside natural ventilation and other sustainability measures. The venue is planned as the centerpiece of a 281,000-square-meter urban regeneration project incorporating public spaces, green areas, leisure and retail. The clubs say the proposal aims to retain the atmosphere and sense of belonging associated with San Siro. The project remains subject to further design, planning and approvals.

Status and timeline

Design unveiled October 29, 2026. Further design and planning work is to follow; construction is expected to begin in 2028, with the first match targeted for the 2031/32 season, subject to necessary approvals.

Design highlights

A concrete X-frame draws on Italian engineering and the craft of Milan’s Duomo; a sweeping, double-curved roof frames the two Curvas and is intended to integrate photovoltaic technology and acoustic measures. The clubs also describe a continuous 360-degree seating bowl, natural ventilation, and a surrounding year-round district with public space and green areas.
