Essen Central Library opens in former department store

The recently opened library is a notable adaptive-reuse project that turns a six-level former department store into a civic interior, with shelving and the façade used to organize varied public activities.

Boeckerhaus, Markt 5/6, Essen, Germany

About this story

Essen’s new Central Library occupies a 10,000-square-metre, six-level former department store in the city centre. MVRDV and includi designed the interior in collaboration with Meyer Architekten; the City of Essen identifies MVRDV, includi and Meyer Architekten as the interior architecture firms. The design uses bookshelves as spatial elements to create different activity areas and an activated interior façade. The project is conceived as a civic “third place” rather than solely a book repository. MVRDV’s project credits also identify 2zu8 Architekten as working with Meyer Architekten on local project phases. The photographer credited on the architect’s project page is Daria Scagliola.

Status and timeline

Opened to the public on October 24, 2026. The City of Essen reported 10,175 visitors on opening day.

Design highlights

Adaptive reuse; shelves serve as both storage and spatial organizers; varied settings for reading, social activity and making; and an activated interior façade that connects the library to the city.
