Elements Pavilions: Copenhagen Architecture Biennial 2027 Open Calls

The call invites proposals for two materially distinct pavilion projects, linking a temporary biennial installation to longer-term community use and asking designers to engage with climate, circular construction and the elements. The publisher-reported submission deadline is February 10, 2027; the official pages also display “Submissions are now closed,” a status conflict editors should resolve before promoting the opportunity.

Copenhagen, Denmark; one pavilion is planned first for Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Plads in the Cultural District and then for a permanent site in Husum Nord; the second is a transformed mobile theatre wagon associated with Christiania.

About this story

Copenhagen Architecture Biennial 2027, organized by Copenhagen Architecture Forum (CAFx), has issued two open calls under the theme “Elements.” The Husum Nord call seeks a newly built, open and accessible pavilion designed for reuse: it is to appear at Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Plads during the biennial, then be dismantled and reconstructed in Husum Nord. The call emphasizes recycled, regenerative and reusable materials, modular construction, and avoiding waste. The second call seeks a redesign and modernization of Christiania’s existing Mobile Theatre wagon as a movable cultural stage, drawing on its history and allowing it to support performances and other activities. The official call names Freetown Christiania as a collaborator; the wagon is intended to have a permanent location behind Operaen and be usable elsewhere in Christiania. The calls offer selected teams DKK 60,000 each; production support is listed separately, up to DKK 280,000 for Husum Nord and DKK 200,000 for the mobile pavilion. At least one member of each submitting team must be based in Denmark. The official calls name jury members including Søren Pihlmann, Ida Willadsen Bang Kjeldsen, Phineas Harper, Paul Roberts, Christele Harrouk, Slaatto Morsbøl, Dr. Margrethe Floryan and, for the mobile call, Anton Lønborg.

Status and timeline

Open calls launched in September 2026. Both official call pages list February 10, 2027 (CET 23:59) as the submission deadline, but currently show “Submissions are now closed.” Winners are scheduled to be announced in March 2027, followed by development and construction from April to August 2027. The biennial runs September 9–October 15, 2027. The Husum Nord pavilion is planned to move to its permanent home after the biennial; the mobile theatre pavilion is intended to serve Christiania thereafter.

Design highlights

Design with fire, water, earth and air rather than seeking mastery over them; restore sensory and material connections to surroundings; create open, inviting structures using circular, reusable materials. The Husum Nord pavilion must be modular, demountable and relocatable. The mobile pavilion adapts an existing historic theatre wagon into a flexible cultural stage.
