About this story
Convened by the City of Baltimore and administered by the Baltimore Development Corporation, Design Baltimore: Gateways is an open ideas competition seeking concepts for three major vehicular approaches to downtown. Architects, designers, artists, planners, students and multidisciplinary teams may participate. The program has a total stated prize pool of $450,000: 12 finalist teams are slated to receive $25,000 each to develop their proposals, and the winning team for each of the northern, western and southern corridors is slated to receive an additional $50,000. Award amounts remain subject to funding availability and Baltimore Development Corporation approval.
Status and timeline
Concept submissions close August 23, 2026. Jury review is scheduled for September 17, 2026. Twelve finalist teams are to receive development stipends, followed by selection of one winner for each corridor.

Gateway architecture; civic identity; infrastructure as public realm; arrival sequences; urban storytelling; multidisciplinary collaboration across architecture, landscape, planning, art and engineering.
