About this story
The Chinati Foundation is advancing a restoration of the two former military Artillery Sheds containing Donald Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum, created from 1982 to 1986. The work will repair roofs, gutters and façades; install more than 10,000 square feet of energy-efficient glass; conserve the artwork with the Getty Conservation Institute and original fabricator Lippincott; improve accessible circulation across the grounds; restore native Chihuahuan Desert grasslands; and add rainwater-harvesting infrastructure. The project is being developed with architect Troy Schaum of Schaum Architects and follows the completed restoration of Chinati’s John Chamberlain Building.
Status and timeline
Fundraising and preconstruction phase. Restoration of the two Artillery Sheds is scheduled to begin in late 2026 as part of Chinati’s phased $16 million Art as Intended capital campaign.
