Arquitectonica designed the MSC Miami Cruise Terminal as an elongated waterfront building on PortMiami's easternmost site, where it can berth three next-generation cruise ships simultaneously and process as many as 36,000 passengers per day. MSC and Fincantieri report a four-level, approximately 492,678-square-foot terminal measuring about 632 metres long, 85 metres wide and 29 metres high. Arquitectonica's larger 1,770,900-square-foot project figure appears to encompass the broader development, including the adjacent six-level parking garage and supporting infrastructure. The west end rises into a glazed grand lobby, while a second elevated volume accommodates VIP facilities and the building tapers into the embarkation and disembarkation gates. Passenger movement is layered vertically so arrivals and departures can operate concurrently with limited overlap. The ground level is primarily used for baggage processing, ship provisioning and operational functions; the second-level entry plaza connects directly to a garage with more than 2,400 spaces. Interior elements reported by Dezeen include wood-lined surfaces, terrazzo floors, blue carpeting, large waiting areas and extensive glazing toward Biscayne Bay. Processing systems include 18 biometric identity-validation pods, 20 security lanes, 22 biometric embarkation gates, 42 luggage-screening machines and an automated baggage system developed by Leonardo. Shore-to-ship electrical connections allow berthed vessels to turn off their engines. Seven site-specific works were commissioned through Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places, including Danielle Roney's MARIS, a 10,816-square-foot generative projection using live regional ocean data. The terminal serves MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.
Status and timeline
Completed. Fincantieri records the groundbreaking on 2022-03-12 and official handover and inauguration on 2025-04-05. The selected architectural feature was published on 2026-09-16.
