About this story
Interior design studio Rezen transformed the lower levels of the Royal George Hotel, a building dating to 1903 and originally used for stables and storerooms, into a flagship Alchemy Saunas venue. The two-storey, 435-square-metre project accommodates a communal wellness program centred on sauna and hot-and-cold bathing. Rezen describes a deliberately restrained, Roman-bathhouse-inspired approach that retains the building’s historic fabric and responds to its existing volumes and textures. Clay brick tiles, raw steel, copper, timber and epoxy flooring form a durable palette intended to patina over time. Photographer credited by Rezen: Jack Lovel. The Town of East Fremantle records approval for a sauna and ice-bath facility at the site in July 2024; the studio’s project page and Alchemy’s current venue page corroborate the completed project and its operation.
