AIA’s July index extends the historic architecture-firm billings downturn

The July data is a direct national indicator of future nonresidential construction activity. The continuing contraction affects firm staffing, mergers and acquisitions, project starts, and the design pipeline nine to twelve months ahead.

About this story

The AIA/Deltek Architecture Billings Index registered 46.6 for July 2026, down from 47.3 in June. Scores below 50 indicate that more firms reported declining billings than growth. Billings remained weak across regions and practice specializations, while project inquiries continued to rise but newly signed design contracts weakened. AIA’s July practice survey also found that nearly one-third of participating firms had completed or actively considered a merger or acquisition during the preceding year.
