About this story
Students in Aalto University's CHEMARTS program worked with Bugaboo to apply seven renewable, waste-based or biodegradable material experiments to an existing stroller frame. The components include a canopy made from orange peel and wool waste; a sawdust and methyl-cellulose composite back panel; recycled egg-carton fibre foam and starch-based foam for cushioning; a hemp-and-lignin lace blanket; bio-based tar-coated vegan leather for the seat; and wood-based cellulose labels. Aalto states that weather resistance, durability, logistics and scalable supply chains remain unresolved for several materials.
Status and timeline
The concept is not a commercial product. It is on display in the From Waste to New exhibition within Designs for a Cooler Planet from September 1 through October 30, 2026. Aalto identifies 2040 as a possible horizon for some of the material solutions to enter everyday products.
