About this story
American architectural heritage specialist Jan van Dijs led a two-year project to manufacture Futuro No. 21 in consultation with Matti Suuronen’s family. The structure follows the lineage of Suuronen’s 1968 fiberglass-reinforced plastic prefab without additions or subtractions to the original concept. For Helsinki Design Week, Marimekko reimagined its interior using prints by Danish designer Vibeke Rohland.
Status and timeline
The two-year reconstruction and manufacturing project produced Futuro No. 21 in 2026. It was presented during Helsinki Design Week from August 28 to September 6, 2026; the festival installation has concluded.
