There is a gentle clarity to Thompson Hill, a home conceived as a place of retreat where architecture dissolves into atmosphere. Light settles softly across surfaces, and each transition feels deliberate, creating a quiet rhythm between intimacy, openness and connection to the surrounding landscape.
The project unfolds as a single-storey residence, embracing a horizontal logic that privileges ease of movement and visual continuity. Rooted in Mediterranean and Provençal influences yet articulated through a contemporary lens, the home balances tradition and modernity with an assured, understated confidence. Its architecture is not defined by grand gestures, but by the precision of its relationships—between rooms, materials and light. At the heart of this composition lies a clear conceptual framework: spatial fluidity, material harmony and a refined domestic scale. Circulation is intuitive, guiding inhabitants through a sequence of spaces that feel both connected and distinct. Sightlines extend across rooms and outward into the garden, reinforcing a constant dialogue between interior and exterior, where boundaries are softened rather than imposed.

A defining element of the project is the flooring, supplied by RIVA Spain, which operates not as a background feature but as a unifying presence. The engineered hardwood planks—crafted from 100% European white oak—run uninterrupted throughout the home, establishing a continuous visual and tactile base. From entry to private quarters, the floor becomes a quiet thread that ties the entire spatial experience together. Selected from the RIVA Elite collection in the Pearl tone, the flooring introduces a softly bleached, luminous quality that enhances the home’s serene atmosphere. Its light oak character reflects natural light with subtle warmth, avoiding starkness while maintaining clarity. The 8-inch plank width strikes a careful balance: contemporary in proportion, yet intimate enough to preserve a sense of domestic scale.

What distinguishes this approach is its refusal to contrast. Rather than competing with architectural elements or furnishings, the flooring integrates seamlessly with them. This decision reinforces the overarching intent of the project—to create a cohesive environment where no single element dominates, but all contribute to a unified spatial narrative. This philosophy becomes particularly evident in the kitchen, where material continuity is expressed with precision. Cabinetry and island surfaces echo the tone and texture of the flooring, forming a monochromatic composition that feels both sophisticated and restrained. Pale countertops introduce a gentle variation, allowing transitions to remain soft and uninterrupted. The result is a space defined by calm coherence rather than visual fragmentation.

Architecturally, Thompson Hill is articulated through a series of carefully considered elements that lend depth and character. Arched openings establish a rhythmic progression between rooms, referencing Mediterranean precedents while softening spatial transitions. Exposed wooden beams introduce texture overhead, offering a warm counterpoint to the light-toned surfaces that define the interior envelope. Contrasting these softer gestures, black-framed arched windows and doors provide a graphic clarity that anchors the design. These elements frame views to the garden with precision, acting as visual thresholds that heighten the relationship between inside and out. Generous yet controlled ceiling heights further contribute to the home’s atmosphere—spacious without becoming monumental, intimate without feeling confined.

The spatial organisation reinforces a delicate balance between privacy and openness. A central social core—comprising the kitchen, living room and dining area—acts as the heart of the home, oriented toward the garden and designed for both everyday living and effortless entertaining. From this nucleus, two distinct wings extend: one dedicated to private family spaces, accessed via a timber-lined corridor, and another reserved for guests, offering a degree of separation that enhances comfort and discretion. Interior design choices amplify the architectural intent through a restrained and timeless palette. Warm whites, soft beiges and natural wood tones establish a calm base, while accents of black and aged metal introduce depth and subtle contrast. Textiles remain soft and tactile, reinforcing a sense of ease and livability. The overall aesthetic recalls a refined modern farmhouse sensibility, filtered through a European lens—elegant, but never overstated. The relationship between interior and exterior is integral to the experience of Thompson Hill. Large arched glass openings invite natural light deep into the home while framing curated views of the surrounding garden. These apertures dissolve the threshold between inside and outside, allowing the landscape to become an extension of the living environment. Outdoor spaces are not secondary, but essential—designed to host, gather and extend daily life beyond the walls

Thompson Hill redefines luxury through restraint and coherence. It is a home where design decisions are guided not by excess, but by clarity of intent. The continuous oak flooring by Riva Spain, the measured architectural language, and the soft material palette converge to create an environment that feels both composed and deeply livable—a place where calm is not an aesthetic, but a lived experience.
