Located at the intersection of José Miguel de la Barra and Ismael Valdés Vergara, the project offers stunning views of the Museo de Bellas Artes and Parque Forestal, grounding the modern redesign in its vibrant historical context.

The primary challenge of this project was to transform a 70-year-old apartment to accommodate the lifestyle of a contemporary couple. By creating spatial continuity, the architects were able to break away from the original programmatic rigidity, enhancing the spatial perception and integrating various uses without prioritizing one over another.

“The flexible use of space is crucial in modern living, allowing the apartment to adapt to changing needs while preserving its historical essence”

Through five vanos of different sizes, each equipped with a sliding door, the design allows for a combination of open and closed spaces. This adaptability means that the apartment can be entirely opened up to create a unified area or partially closed off for privacy, catering to diverse living scenarios such as hosting guests or containing cooking odors.

The careful selection of materials played a pivotal role in the project. The architects chose to work primarily with raw iron and mañío wood, using metal plates and wooden boards to construct the centers and sliding doors of the vanos. This minimalist approach ensured a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.

Emphasizing craftsmanship, the project employed skilled artisans to execute the work with precision, embracing both perfection and the inherent imperfections of handcrafted elements.

The interior design reflects a seamless blend of old and new, with custom-built furniture and hardware crafted from the same materials as the structural elements. This continuity in material choice enhances the overall coherence of the space.

Located in Parque Forestal, Santiago, the completed project spans 230 m², offering a modern yet historically respectful living environment. The thoughtful design and material choices ensure that the apartment not only meets contemporary needs but also honors its past.

By integrating flexibility into the design, the architects have created a space that can evolve with its inhabitants. The ability to adapt the layout and functionality of the apartment ensures that it remains relevant and comfortable over time.
