Spaces for Growth – IES Via de la Plata by Ricardo Gonzalez Martinez and VZ Arquitectos

Rising gently from a natural depression with sweeping views toward the Sierra de Bejar, IES Via de la Plata unfolds as a thoughtful architectural response to place, learning and community. It is a building where landscape, light and social interaction shape everyday education with calm confidence and lasting clarity.

Located at the southern edge of Guijuelo, Salamanca, the new IES Via de la Plata, designed by Ricardo Gonzalez Martinez together with Enrique Villar Pagola and Rodrigo Zaparin Hernandez—partners at VZ Arquitectos—, occupies a dramatic site defined by a pronounced north–south slope and long views across the surrounding landscape. Rather than resisting the terrain, the project embraces it, allowing architecture and topography to work together. This sensitive siting establishes a strong dialogue between the built form and its environment, reinforcing the idea that education does not exist in isolation but is inseparable from its context. The architects resolve the challenging slope through two large horizontal platforms that organize both circulation and program. These platforms are connected externally by a system of stepped seating and integrated ramps, ensuring full accessibility while creating informal gathering spaces. The upper platform accommodates the main entrance, landscaped areas and recreational zones, while the lower level houses the sports courts, gymnasium, and covered porch. This clear sectional strategy brings order, legibility, and ease of movement to the entire campus.

"Education is built within shared spaces, between courtyards, stepped seating and classrooms open to the light."

Volumetrically, the institute is conceived as a large, compact rectangular prism. Within this seemingly solid mass, two significant voids are carved out: a landscaped internal courtyard and a central covered space that rises through three levels. Illuminated by five generous skylights, these voids become the social and environmental heart of the building. They draw natural light deep into the plan and visually connect circulation spaces across all levels, fostering orientation and openness. All polyvalent classrooms are located along the southern facade, where they benefit from uninterrupted views toward the Sierra de Gredos. This deliberate orientation transforms the classroom into an extension of the landscape. Deep terrace overhangs and adjustable shading screens carefully control solar exposure, balancing daylight, comfort and energy efficiency. The result is a learning environment filled with soft, natural light that enhances concentration while maintaining a strong visual connection to nature.

What distinguishes IES Via de la Plata is its clear pedagogical ambition. The central communal space is designed around fundamental educational values such as sharing, collective responsibility and respectful interaction. As the architects suggest, the most meaningful moments in education often happen between classes. This space becomes a place for encounter rather than transit, encouraging spontaneous exchange among students and teachers throughout the day. The central stepped seating structure amplifies the spatial potential of this communal heart. It functions simultaneously as circulation, informal seating and an event space, accommodating assemblies, presentations and group activities. Visually connected to all floors, the space reinforces a sense of community and belonging. Its physical link to the multipurpose hall and library further expands its flexibility, allowing the building to adapt easily to different educational and social needs.

"Architecture acts as a silent teacher, fostering community, responsibility and collective learning."

Conceptually, the project is imagined as a flagship vessel navigating the long journey of learning. This metaphor is expressed architecturally through the prominent projection of the collaborative projects classroom, which advances westward like a prow. It is a powerful symbolic gesture that frames education as a shared voyage and positions the school as an active agent in shaping future generations with purpose and direction.

From a technical perspective, the building is designed according to ECCN energy efficiency standards and aspires to LEED Gold certification. Passive strategies such as compact form and optimal classroom orientation are combined with advanced systems including geothermal climate control, photovoltaic energy generation, rainwater reuse and enthalpy heat recovery ventilation. A DALI lighting system further optimizes energy consumption. Together, these measures ensure comfort, sustainability and long term environmental responsibility without compromising architectural quality.

IES Via de la Plata demonstrates how contemporary educational architecture can be both rigorous and generous. Its careful balance of structure and openness, efficiency and emotion, results in a building that feels robust yet humane. The project succeeds not only as a functional institution, but as a civic landmark that quietly elevates the daily experience of learning through design.

One of the strengths of this project lies in its restraint and clarity. Rather than relying on formal excess, it builds meaning through proportion, light, and spatial relationships. The architecture trusts its users, allowing students and teachers to appropriate the spaces naturally. In this way, it offers a compelling model for future educational environments rooted in place, sustainability, and shared human values.
