Harmony in Nature – Villa Sunnanö by Murman Arkitekter

Villa Sunnanö by Murman Arkitekter offers a tranquil retreat where modern architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Set on the edge of a serene lake, the villa’s open structure invites the outdoors in, framing views of pine forests and the shimmering water. It’s a peaceful space where architecture complements the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

Located on a picturesque lakeside in Sweden, Villa Sunnanö is designed to embrace its natural setting. Murman Arkitekter’s vision was to create a home that is both functional and in harmony with its environment. The structure’s barn-like form, with wooden cladding and sleek, minimalist lines, pays homage to traditional Swedish countryside architecture, while integrating modern elements to meet contemporary needs.

"Framed by nature, Villa Sunnanö offers a harmonious balance between modern design and the peaceful Swedish landscape."

The villa’s layout is characterized by its long, horizontal wings, each opening up to the landscape. Large, floor-to-ceiling windows dominate each room, ensuring that every space within the house is flooded with natural light and offers panoramic views of the surrounding lake and forest. The architectural design not only maximizes the connection to nature but also promotes a sense of openness and tranquility within the home.

To reduce the scale of the structure and clearly define its functions, Murman Arkitekter designed the villa with distinct wings, each serving a different purpose. These wings stretch outward from the main body of the house, offering patios that allow residents to enjoy the changing light and views from various angles. The result is a home that feels intimately connected to its surroundings, no matter the time of day or season. The choice of materials plays a crucial role in Villa Sunnanö’s connection to nature. The use of wood, both inside and out, enhances the rustic charm of the property while blending seamlessly into the landscape. The earthy tones of the wooden cladding complement the surrounding trees and natural terrain, further emphasizing the villa’s organic aesthetic. The interior design mirrors this simplicity, with natural materials and neutral colors dominating the space.

"Embracing sustainability and simplicity, this lakeside retreat invites you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of nature."

One of the villa’s most unique features is its adaptability to the Swedish seasons. In the summer, the open-plan design and large windows invite in cooling breezes and offer uninterrupted views of the lush greenery. In winter, the villa becomes a cozy refuge, with its wooden elements providing warmth and the expansive windows framing the stark beauty of the snow-covered landscape. This thoughtful design ensures that the home is a sanctuary year-round.

In addition to the main living spaces, Villa Sunnanö includes a sauna and a remodeled log cabin that serves as a garage, adding to the property’s charm. These elements speak to the architects’ focus on creating a space that is both practical and respectful of traditional Swedish building techniques. The sauna, a quintessential feature in Scandinavian homes, is placed to offer calming views of the lake, enhancing the overall sense of retreat and relaxation.

Murman Arkitekter has successfully merged modern architectural practices with sustainable principles in Villa Sunnanö. The design promotes energy efficiency through natural ventilation and passive solar heating, minimizing the home’s environmental footprint. This sustainability is not only a functional aspect of the villa but also contributes to its aesthetic, as the architects embraced natural materials and a design that blends seamlessly into the landscape.
