A Reflection in Space – Yangzhou Zhongshuge by XL-Muse

Set within the historic town of Yangzhou, the Zhongshuge bookshop offers an enchanting journey through literature, enveloped by a design that mirrors the poetic waterways of the region. The curved arches and reflective surfaces create an ethereal tunnel, inviting visitors into a world of quiet reflection and intellectual discovery.

Designed by Shanghai-based studio XL-Muse, the Yangzhou Zhongshuge bookshop is a remarkable fusion of art, architecture, and storytelling. Nestled in one of China’s most culturally rich towns, the bookstore pays homage to the region’s waterways, historically used as transport routes for scholars and traders. The design echoes the poetic rhythm of Yangzhou’s landscape, evoking a sense of continuity between the past and present.

"Reflecting the cultural significance of Yangzhou’s waterways, the design celebrates tradition while embracing contemporary aesthetics. It is a place where books, art, and architecture converge."

At the heart of the design lies the mirrored tunnel, an architectural feature that instantly captivates visitors. Inspired by the city’s famous bridges and their arching forms, the designers created a space that simulates the experience of walking through a waterway. The mirrors on the ceiling and floor multiply the arches into infinite reflections, transforming the tunnel into a surreal, otherworldly experience.

The store’s layout is more than just a visually stunning display; it is also deeply functional. The reflective surfaces create a sense of expansiveness, making the relatively narrow space feel larger than it is. As visitors move through the space, the boundaries between the physical and the imagined begin to blur, reinforcing the connection between literature and architecture.

"Inspired by the fluidity of nature, Yangzhou Zhongshuge invites visitors to reflect on the past, present, and future through the lens of literature."

XL-Muse’s design draws heavily from traditional Chinese aesthetic principles, particularly the idea of duality and balance. The interplay between light and shadow, between the physical form of the arches and their mirrored reflections, mimics the yin and yang philosophy. This creates a balanced environment that encourages both contemplation and exploration.

The bookstore is divided into different zones, each offering a unique experience. While the mirrored tunnel leads visitors deeper into the heart of the store, other sections offer cozy reading nooks and shelves lined with curated literary collections. Each zone is designed with intention, creating a seamless flow from one area to the next while maintaining a consistent thematic thread.

Yangzhou Zhongshuge is not just a bookshop—it is a cultural landmark. The design successfully bridges the gap between tradition and modernity, offering a space where visitors can engage with the city’s literary and cultural history while experiencing cutting-edge architectural innovation. It serves as a testament to the evolving role of bookstores in a digital age, where spaces must offer more than just books but a holistic, immersive experience.

As bookstores face increasing competition from online platforms, projects like Yangzhou Zhongshuge remind us of the importance of physical spaces that offer more than just commerce. By creating a serene, reflective environment, XL-Muse has transformed the act of reading into a sensory experience, where architecture becomes a silent partner in the journey through literature.
