A Lakeside Home Grounded in Oak – Minnesota Residence by RIVA Spain
"At Minnesota Residence, RIVA Spain’s oak brings a quiet warmth to a home shaped by its lakeside setting."
From the water’s edge, Minnesota Residence appears in layers: a dock at the shore, a smaller building close to the lake, and the main house rising behind it among mature trees. The view back toward the residence reveals a sloping site and rooms lit across multiple levels. Inside, the lake is most immediate in the principal living areas, where large openings connect the interior to a furnished terrace.
The house presents a more contained face on arrival, with pitched roof forms, dark upper walls, and lighter walls below. Its lakeside side is more open. Glazed doors and windows expose the living spaces to the view and make the terrace an extension of the rooms beside it. The photographs show this relationship most clearly at dusk, when the kitchen and sitting areas remain visible from outdoors.
Within the main interior, the living, dining, and kitchen areas occupy one connected setting. A round dining table sits between the kitchen and the open stair, while the sitting area faces the terrace. Their furniture, rugs, and lighting distinguish the spaces without interrupting the broad run of flooring beneath them. That continuity helps the rooms read together, even as each serves a different part of daily life.
The kitchen has a large stone island with seating along one side. Wood cabinetry extends across the rear wall, and a long run of shelves breaks up the surface above the worktop. Seen from the dining table, the island has a substantial presence; seen from the terrace, it is part of the larger view through the house. The floor carries across these changing viewpoints, linking the kitchen to the surrounding rooms.
RIVA Spain supplied the flooring as part of its RIVA MAX collection: ten-inch-wide engineered planks made with European white oak, in the color Sand and Character grade. In the photographs, the generous plank width is especially apparent in the open living areas. The floor gives the interior a light, consistent base beneath the darker dining furniture, upholstered seating, and patterned stone of the kitchen island.
"The wood carries through the interior in broad planes and fine vertical lines, echoing the natural textures beyond the house."
The staircase is the other prominent use of wood. Its open treads and slender dark rails leave views through the stair, while closely spaced vertical slats form a more solid backdrop. This RIVA crystal color wall covering combines perfectly with the design. The slats rise beside the circulation route, giving an element used to move between levels a clear architectural presence in the rooms around it.
Elsewhere, the interior allows for a different degree of expression. One sitting room has a patterned feature wall behind the television and darker upholstered furniture; a utility room uses cabinetry against patterned walls. These spaces add variation to the house, but the strongest visual relationship in the supplied photographs remains the one between the open main floor, its terrace, and the lake beyond.
The wide oak floor holds the principal rooms together, and the slatted wall marks the stair without closing it off. Along the lakeside edge, broad openings keep the water in view from the spaces where the house gathers.
